Replacing a fence in Grandview Heights, Ohio

5/1/2006, Scott: We first tried to get our old fence replaced last year when we moved in. It was the common 6 ft. variety you would purchase at Lowes or Home Depot. We found out you needed a fence permit, so we applied.

5/23/2006, City of Grandview: No, you can not have a 6 foot fence on a corner lot, it must be 5 foot. So, we pondered this thing a bit and as we walked around our new neighborhood, we noticed corner lot after corner lot with a 6 ft. fence… So we waited until this year…

3/23/2007, Scott: We applied a 2nd time to get a 5ft fence.

3:50pm, 3/23/2007, City of Grandview: No, the contractor has to submit the permit and you might need to go to the Zoning board to get it approved.

9:00AM, 4/2/2007, Scott: Today, the fence guy called to ask us if we would like a fence, short notice, but we said yes. I have my doubts because, I was not sure if he is going to get a permit from the city. I called the zoning office and was going to ask for John Kuss, Director of Building and Zoning, but he was not in and I did not feel like leaving a message…

11:00AM, 4/2/2007, Scott: So far the fence company did not get the permit but was told he could get one in the afternoon, since the inspector out to lunch because of his brother’s birthday, so they begun to remove the old fence and haul it away. I hope they don’t have any problems this afternoon…

1:00pm, 4/2/2007, City of Grandview: No, because it’s a corner lot, they will not let us put up a fence unless we get it approved by the board of zoning appeals. But even though they have a meeting this month (April) we must submit 8 copies of our request to the zoning board by April 14th for the next meeting May 9th. I should have known this and waited until it was approved…

3:30PM, 4/2/2007, Scott: Last effort of the day. Because the zoning code does not say anything between 2 houses we are going to ask for a permit to get the fence put in between our house and the neighbors.

3:50pm, 4/2/2007, City of Grandview: No, because John is still gone for the day and the secretary does not have the authority to make any decisions… I guess what bothers me so much is that the only thing we heard back in 2006 from John was “No permit issued. Maximum side yard fence height is 5 ft.” Nothing about board of zoning because it was a replacement fence… I will wait until I speak with John tomorrow to comment any further….

4:10PM, 4/2/2007, Scott: Well this was the last effort, I was going to go down to the office and speak with someone, John if he was there, someone, something, I had to get this fence this month…

4:30PM, 4/2/2007, City of Grandview: Maybe… After a short trip over the building office, I was able to speak with John and have him give me an OK to submit paper work tomorrow for the board of zoning appeals meeting next Wednesday. Crossing Fingers…

9:00AM, 4/2/2007, Scott: I spent the night working on diagrams and putting photos in an 8 page document I hope this works out…

9:30AM, 4/3/2007, City of Grandview: “Looks Good…” I spent the night updating the request for the fence, I put pretty color pictures and diagrams in an 8 page document, printed 8 copies of it and according to the office, things looked good. We still need to contact about 20 neighbors, but other than that things look good.

2:30PM, 4/2/2007, Scott: Today we had a temporary chain link fence put up for castle, it looks terrible so we are going to take it down.

4:00PM, 4/11/2007, City of Grandview: “We have to cancel the meeting.” Yes, we do everything they ask and 3 hours before the meeting, they cancel the meeting… To top it off we was told it’s a 5 minute meeting… I am upset. Very upset. This is not right.

5:50PM, 4/18/2007, Scott: Today we are going over to get permission to get a permit to build a fence. We are going over in about 10 minutes or so (about 20min early) to sit and wait for the board to arrive. What do I think will happen? I am not sure, given past results, I think something will come up that was never said before and we will be delayed, yet again. The optimist in me thinks it will take 10 minutes and we will get our permit. So who will win, the realist, or the optimist? I will let you know soon!

7:00PM, 4/18/2007, City of Grandview: Yes. Aside from one lady from just down the road, Dorothy Pritchard, voted against. The reason: she wanted to know the species and she did not like the fact that we were going to put a 5 foot fence 18″ from the sidewalk.
